In the wake of the pro-Palestinian protests campuses last year, many US and UK universities have embraced a stance of ‘institutional neutrality’. In this paper, I show how this notion is often misunderstood. I defend instead a position of ‘institutional restraint’. Institutional restraint is both a principled condition of academic freedom and freedom of speech and a prudential guarantee against the political capture of universities.
